Fine Louis XVI Style Carved White Marble Fireplace Surround with Caryatid Figures A finely carved white marble fireplace surround in the Louis XVI taste, the frieze centred with a classical female mask flanked by floral swags and bead moulding. The jambs formed as caryatid figures with draped ornament, floral garlands and foliate carving, raised on cylindrical bases. The stepped mantel shelf above with rounded ends rests upon the carved supports and sits above a matching marble hearth. Carved in white marble with subtle natural grey veining. The surround was commissioned for a London townhouse but ultimately never installed. The surround, including the mantel shelf and hearth, disassembles into 11 sections for transport and installation. Dimensions Fire surround on hearth 158.5 cm wide × 35.5 cm deep × 122 cm high Fire opening 85.5 cm wide × 87.5 cm high Hearth 158.5 cm wide × 35.5 cm deep × 4.5 cm high Condition Offered in good overall condition. Minor nibbles and small surface marks to the marble consistent with handling and storage. There is a repaired crack to the base of one of the caryatid pillars, as shown in the photographs.
