Chinese Export Lacquer Pen Box – Late 19th Century Rectangular Chinese export lacquer pen or writing box, dating from the late 19th century (c. 1870–1900). The exterior is finished in black lacquer and decorated with a gilt chinoiserie scene depicting figures in a garden landscape with pavilions, trees and water, produced for the Western market. The hinged lid opens to a fitted interior with compartments intended for dip pens and writing accessories, consistent with Victorian-period Western use. The decoration and form are typical of late Qing export lacquerware. Measues 20 x 6 x 3 cm The box is offered in used, original condition, showing surface wear, rubbing and losses to the gilt decoration, along with scattered lacquer wear and abrasions commensurate with age and use. The hinge is intact and the box opens and closes correctly. With contents as pictured
