WWII British Defence Medal (1939-1945) – King George VI This is an original WWII Defence Medal, awarded to military personnel and civilians who contributed to the defence of Britain and the Commonwealth during the Second World War. Obverse: Features a left-facing portrait of King George VI, with the inscription: "GEORGIVS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX F:D:IND:IMP." (George VI, by the Grace of God, King of all Britons, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India). Reverse: Displays the Royal Crown resting on an oak tree, flanked by two rampant lions, symbolising Britain’s resilience and strength during the war. The inscription reads: "THE DEFENCE MEDAL", with the years 1939-1945 above. Material & Size: Material: Cupro-nickel. Diameter: Approx. 36mm. Suspension & Condition: Retains its original suspender bar but is missing the ribbon. Shows light wear and toning, consistent with age. Historical Significance: Awarded to both military and civilian personnel who served in non-operational areas but played a vital role in Britain’s defence. Eligible recipients included: Home Guard, Air Raid Precautions (ARP) wardens, Fire Service, Police, and Civil Defence workers. Members of the Armed Forces stationed in Britain for at least 3 years. Those serving in territories subject to air raids.
