Early 20th Century British Athletic Sports Medal A fine bronze and gilt sports award medal, likely dating to the early 20th century. The obverse features a raised emblem of the Prince of Wales’s feathers, comprising three ostrich plumes emerging from a coronet, over a circular gilt centre. This emblem is traditionally associated with the Prince of Wales and has been used in British military, sporting, and civic awards. The outer section of the medal displays finely detailed laurel and oak wreaths, symbols of victory and achievement. The reverse of the medal depicts a relief scene of three athletes engaged in a running race, with a fourth figure in the background. This design is characteristic of early 20th-century athletic medals, particularly those awarded at school, regimental, or community sporting events. The top of the medal is fitted with a suspension loop and a brass ring, suggesting it was once attached to a ribbon or worn as a pendant. Condition: The medal shows an attractive aged patina, with wear commensurate with age. Some minor surface marks and signs of oxidation. The gilt centre remains well-defined, with the relief details still sharp. Dimensions: Approx. 40mm diameter (excluding loop). Possible Origin & Use: British school, regimental, or community sports award. Military or public service athletic competition. Could be associated with the Victorian or Edwardian period, possibly pre-WWII.
