George Morland – Morland’s Summer (1802) Coloured Mezzotint by William Barnard A decorative early 19th-century coloured mezzotint titled Morland’s Summer, engraved by William Barnard (1774–1849) after the 1789 pastoral scene by George Morland (1763–1804). Published in August 1802 by Barnard at Fitzroy Square, London. The composition features a resting shepherd and dog beside a stream, with a cow and two reclining sheep set within a woodland glade – a typical example of Morland’s sentimental rural genre scenes. Mounted and set behind glass in what appears to be its original gilt gesso frame. Inscribed below image: Morland's Summer Engraved by W. Barnard London, Published August 1802 by W. Barnard, Fitzroy Square Dimensions: Frame: 63 x 53 cm (24¾ x 21 in approx.) Condition: The mezzotint shows surface foxing, light water staining and general age toning Frame is rubbed and worn with losses to the gilding and old worm damage Some signs of damp to lower edge Remnants of a label verso mentioning presentation by the Duchess of York to the Royal Family (partially obscured, no clear provenance) Not examined out of frame An evocative period print with good decorative presence despite its worn state.
