Victorian Watercolour of Rural Cottage Scene by Mathilda Nottelle (Exh. 1879–1892) An attractive late 19th century English watercolour depicting a thatched cottage with a figure feeding poultry along a country path. The scene is set beneath a clouded sky and bordered by trees, with fine handling of detail and gentle colouring typical of Victorian watercolourists. Signed with monogram and dated 1888 lower right. Mathilda Nottelle was an active Birmingham-based artist who exhibited between 1879 and 1892, including with the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. She is recorded as having lived at 42 Cregoe Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham. Her known subjects include landscapes, river scenes and occasional Indian views. Presented behind glass in a later gilt frame. Frame measures 33 x 25.5 cm. Condition: Watercolour with some scattered foxing and slight age-related discolouration. Colours remain stable. The frame in good condition with minor wear.
