Trompe l'Oeil Still Life of Hanging Songbirds Michelangelo Meucci (Italian, 1840–1909) We are pleased to offer a charming trompe l'oeil study depicting two hanging songbirds, a robin and bullfinch, suspended from hooks against a painted simulated pine-board ground. Finely detailed and beautifully observed, the composition displays the artist's skill in capturing the texture and colouring of the plumage whilst creating a convincing illusionistic effect. The intimate oval format lends itself particularly well to the subject, drawing attention to the carefully rendered birds and the subtle tonal variations throughout the composition. Rich in colour and decorative appeal, the painting is a fine example of the naturalistic bird studies for which the artist is known. Signed M. Meucci and inscribed Firenze lower right. Presented in its original oval frame, displaying minor wear consistent with age. Ready to hang. Dimensions: 21.6 x 17.8 cm (8.5 x 7 in.)
