G.B. Mulready 1840
Collectables
Auction ends 12 Jul 2026
1d envelope, stereo A134, variety double impression, one inverted and uninked, posted from Rugby to Worcestershire, with red Maltese Cross cancellation and Rugby backstamp. This remarkable albino error presumably occurred through two sheets of paper being fed in to the press. The top sheet received an inked impression but the second sheet, from which this example emanated, received an uninked impression. The uninked sheet was subsequently discovered, the control of paper being particularly strict. It was then returned to the press but fed in inverted in relation to the first time it was in the press. The resulting uninked impression is clearly visible and includes the "POSTAGE" design folded on to the reverse. A discovery all the more remarkable over 150 years after the Mulready's were introduced. Such a discovery after such a length of time indicates that it was likely that only one sheet of twelve was so treated and that this in all probability is a unique survivor. With B.P.A. Certificate No.45,731 (1996). SG ME2i
