About The ART and the ARTIST

‘OBEY’ this. ‘Andre the Giant ’ this one is the Middle Face offset lithographic Print available in this series of ‘OBEY’ Triptych by Shepard Fairey. It is a rare mixture of parody and protest, which serves to subvert the very medium to which it attaches itself. The simple one word message ‘OBEY’ stirs the bewildered masses.

This is an impressive wall hanging. Shepard Fairey aka OBEY has created, an instant conversation piece. Along with Obey Unique signature motifs the themes of each artwork are environment, power, struggle and fame with icons such as David bowie, Martin Luther King and Andy Warhol.

In his own words, plastered posters which adorn advertising billboards ‘market nothingness’ while large scale posters with a single word impart direction.

Dissent is at the root of what he does, and it continues to be an important part of his work, pushing back against dominant systems that allow and perpetuate injustice requires dissent.

PROPAGANDIST, ARCH MANIPULATOR, INCITER, PROVOCATEUR, THESE ARE ALL WORDS USED TO DESCRIBE THE ARTIST SHEPARD FAIREY,

American artist, Shepard Fairey, is the man many hail as the originator of the modern urban art scene and is an undeniable phenomenon. First coming to prominence in 1989 with his now ubiquitous ‘Obey Giant’ sticker campaign, the self styled phenomenologist has since gone on to become one of the most recognisable artists of the early 2000’s.

A major figure of the contemporary street art movement, Shepard Fairey rose to prominence in the early 1990s with his “Andre the Giant Has a Posse” campaign, which distributed posters, stickers, and murals featuring the eponymous wrestler around Providence, Rhode Island. Fairey’s iconic 2008.

“Hope” campaign poster for President Barack Obama encapsulates a number of the artist’s recurring concerns, including propaganda, portraiture, and political power.

Fairey’s work, which has sold for six figures at auction, can be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.
